Nancy Pelosi expected in Taiwan

The speaker of the House of Representatives – Nancy Pelosi – arrives Tuesday 2nd of August in Malaysia, expected soon for Taiwan. This action could further escalate tensions with China which claims the independent island nation as its own sovereign land.

Pelosi’s delegation plane touched down at an air force base. Malaysia’s Prime Minister – Ismail Sabri Yaakob – met with her for a lunch meeting. Although there is no official announcement, media in Taiwan reports that Pelosi will arrive in Taipei Tuesday night. No other higher ranking US official has visited the country in more than 25 years.

China warned of possible repercussions , stating that their miltary force will ‘never sit idly by’ in case Pelosi will visit. The recent tension drove concerns in the area that can affect global supply chains and markets, especially the semi conductor sector.

In response to Beijing’s statements, the White House responded there is no US interest in further escalating tensions. John Kirby – White House speaker – ultimately described that the decision to visit or not Taiwan is ultimately Pelosi’s. He also further stated that some officials are concerned China could use the visit as an excuse in order to retaliate more provocatively. These actions could include missile launches around the island nation, dispatching aircraft into their airspace and / or deploying large scale marine exercises in the strait.

As far as history goes, Taiwan and China officially split up in 1949 after the Communists won a civil war on the mainland. Ever since, the US maintains informal relations and defense ties with Taiwan even as it recognizes Beijing as the government of China. The latter government however sees this making the island’s independence permanent.

Lee Hsien Loong – Singapore’s PM – emphasized the importance of stable relations between the 2 super powers. A similar statement was echoed by Japan’s Foreign Minister – Yoshimasa Hayashi. The Philippines had a similar reaction as well.

Over the past years, China has been increasingly diplomatic and military pressure on the Taiwan. This has been the case especially after Taiwan’s refusal to sustain the claim that the island nation and mainland China make up a single Chinese nation.

Thursday 4th of August 2022, Nancy Pelosi will meet South Korean National Assembly Speaker Kim Jin Pyo to talk about security in the region. The House speaker will also visit Japan but so far the date hasn’t been confirmed.
